Oracy

At Byron Court, we want our pupils, staff and parents to speak with kindness, confidence and clarity, while valuing their own and others' contributions. Children learn through developing ideas, taking risks and deepening understanding through meaningful talk with their peers. They can then articulate that learning clearly and appropriately, depending on the audience and content. Adults guide this process through valuing the learners' voices and responding in a way that helps them to clarify and develop their thoughts.

Oracy skills which children will be taught:

  • How to express ideas clearly and confidently in public
  • How to use language to reason
  • How to talk and work well in a group
  • How to understand someone else’s point of view

Aims

We offer children the opportunity to develop a full repertoire of oracy skills. We will teach communication skills that a democratic 21st century society requires of its citizens:

  • Confidence, clarity and self-expression
  • The ability to listen to and acknowledge other perspectives
  • Ways of working with others to solve problems
  • To achieve these aims, we will:
  1. Encourage high levels of participation in dialogue (e.g. numerous children contribute to a whole class discussion and discuss each other’s ideas)
  2. Encourage children to elaborate their ideas (e.g. ‘Can you explain a bit more what you mean by that?)
  3. Encourage the questioning of ideas by students (e.g. ‘Do you agree that Max is right? Why?’)
  4. Provide opportunities for organised group work that is structured and purposeful
