Who are school governors and what do they do?

School governors come from every walk of life. There are over 300,000 school governors in England and they form the largest volunteer force in the country.

Each individual governor is a member of a governing body, which is established in law as a corporate body.   Individual governors may not act independently of the rest of the governing body. Decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing body.

The role of the governing body is a strategic one, its key functions are to:

  • set the aims and objectives for the school
  • set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
  • set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
  • be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)

The headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing body.

'Aladdin' Whole School Theatre Trip (December 2017)

governors on: Byron Court School Governors' Blog

I attended as a parent volunteer and parent governor on this whole school trip. It was very well organised and the children were so excited. It was certainly the first time my daughter has been to the theatre, and I am sure for a lot of the other children too. Thank you to all the staff for organising such a wonderful trip.

Ms Bakdoud and 4ZB

"I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to you and the whole class 4ZB for a great day out to the British Museum. The day was well organised by you, Ms Bakdoud, with full information regarding travel arrangements, map of the museum and the area's which were to be visited.  The group of children were very well behaved, especially during the long walk between the station and the museum; overall their behaviour was excellent throughout the day.  Well done Ms Bakdoud and 4ZB and thank you for the opportunity to be part of the visit to the British Museum"

A fantastic event! It was lovely to see so many parents and children attend this event. Well done to all the children and of course their teachers in making this event such a success. My daughter keeps checking what fair trade products we have in our cupboards!

Welcome to our Governors' Blog

We have created this blog to enable our school governors to post messages about their work with the school, to help you understand their role and how they support Byron Court strategically.  I hope all parents find this useful.  Happy blogging governors!
